Removing CD Scratches

Removing Scratches from CD's

Firstly, we must make it clear that we accept no responsibility or liability should the methods shown in the following pages not work or cause any further damage to your CD's. We strongly recommend that you try using a CD that you don't mind damaging in the first instance and practice before trying on your most important CD's.

A disc is generally repairable unless the scratches or damage go deep enough to interfere with the metal foil layer. If this is the case then there is a good chance that the disc is beyond repair, but hey, why not try it anyway, you have nothing to lose at that point.

Right, let's get started!

First off, make sure you have the items required in this process to hand. You will need:

 Vaseline
 Some soft cloths, one dampened
 A scratched CD!

You may need:

 A banana
 Toothpaste
 Peanut Butter
 Brasso

Take your CD and hold it in your one hand. Using the soft cloth, take a dab of the Vaseline and carefully rub it onto the disc, working from the centre to the outside of the disc. Don't worry how much Vaseline you use! Careful that you don't wipe around the disc in circles as this can cause grooves that will cause further issues.

Now that your CD is covered in Vaseline, we need to use the second, damp cloth to wipe the Vaseline off the disc. As you clean the disc off, you should notice that the scratches have been cleaned up.

Now, time to see if your hard work has paid off... Try playing your CD, DVD or games disc and see if the scratches and jumping have been solved. If they have, great! If not, read on!

We have had reports that other household items can work as the cleaning agent, instead of Vaseline. These include toothpaste, Brasso and believe it or not, even Peanut Butter! The same idea applies with each of these items, carefully wiping onto the disc again from the centre to the outside and then cleaning off with a damp cloth.

We hope this guide has proved useful and saved you some much needed cash from having to go out and buy new CD's, DVD's and games discs!

Good luck
